Internship opportunities

UYWEFA is always happy to hear from potential volunteers who may be interested in working with us.

We are also recruiting interns for three-month placements during through the year. Further information is available on request from Jake Blanco, International Volunteer Coordinator (jakeblanco@me.com).

Accommodation

At UYWEFA, interns are housed with home stays within the community. Accommodation is simple (e.g. outside toilet, no running water), but comfortable. While staying with your respective host family one will be considered a family member and be able to experience all aspects of Ugandan culture.

While staying with a host family, a volunteer will be provided with breakfast, lunch, evening tea, and dinner. Two volunteers can share a room but each volunteer must have his/her own bed. Volunteers will have to bring their own bed sheets and mosquito net.

Volunteers are asked to pay 150 USD per month , which covers accommodation and all meals at home. We can also arrange transport from Entebbe airport outside Kampala for 50 USD .

 Requirements

  • Minimal time commitment is 3 months
  • Interns will be responsible for covering all their costs (flights, accommodation etc.)

Teaching computer to young children

Uganda Youth and Women’s Effort Fighting AIDS opened its education centre in Kazo with the intention of providing free and discounted education to the most children in the community and provide a place for households to receive training on how they can generate an income. The centre was started on land rented by the local lady and has been run and funded by the community and international volunteers for the past two years . At present the center is running from nursery to primary five. The poor education system in Uganda which train people to be job seekers than creators has forced us to introduce computer training on our school so as these young children can have the opportunity to grow up with technology Skills in future so as they can became resourceful citizen of the country and to make a very big change on the education system of Uganda.

Very few people in our community have the computer knowledge so having an international person with computer skills will be of a great impact. We need volunteers and  expect the teacher to first teach introduction to computer package

 

Financial Advisor and Accountant

Uganda Youth and Women’s Effort Fighting AIDS (UYWEFA) supports people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. UYWEFA provides education support, economic empowerment, home based care and youth activites. UYWEFA’s long-term objective is to ensure people affected by HIV/AIDS in our community have access to healthcare and education opportunities in order to be able to provide for their and their family’s needs. UYWEFA serves the community of Kazo, approximately 20 kilometers outside of Kampala, Uganda.

UYWEFA is seeking a volunteer to aid in the development of our accounting practices and mechanisms for maintaining several income generating projects. The volunteer will also provide financial training for the organization’s staff and community members on basic budgeting and starting and maintaining a business.

Qualifications

Accounting or financial management background. Experience working in finances for NGOs or non profits. Experience or interest in developing and conducting financial training programs

 

Filming and Photography

UYWEFA’s long-term objective is to ensure people affected by HIV/AIDS in our community have access to healthcare and education opportunities in order to be able to provide for their and their family’s needs. UYWEFA is serves the community of Kazo, approximately 20 kilometers outside of Kampala, Uganda.

In kazo, there is increasing no. school dropouts due to early pregnancies. This is because kazo is boardering kimumbasa, one of the biggest prostitution centres in kampala kawempe division. The high level of poverty and high rate of HIV in the community has left the youth without parents, these have resorted to prostitution as source of income.

The Innovation center under the UYWEFA umbrella empowers vulnerable youth most especially the young mothers by providing technical training in various fields such as tailoring, music and dance, candle making, leadership skils etc. The attained skills provide a chance for the youth to get involved in business hence being able to sustain themselves and not get engaged in prostitution.

UYWEFA innovation center is seeking a volunteer to serve in the filming sect. The volunteer will meet with the trainees on an individual basis to provide support and training in music, dance and drama ; they will also facilitate group gatherings.

Couching football to young children

UYWEFA international education centre offer free and reduced education costs to orphan and vulnarable children in the community of Kazo. The school is community owned and mostly community driven . In may the community of kazo organises school foot ball and netball cometition for the children below the age of 16years. UYWEFA being a new school is hoping to participate in this tournamet for the first time in 2015. We are looking for some one who can train this kids in foot ball and joining us in his humatarian organisation to put this kids on the top, We know they have never been in any tournament and non of them has ever received foot ball training . This position needs some one motivated since all kids in our school have not yet been trained before

Volunteer roles and duties

Recruit student athletes, and submit their academic records for admission. Develop the offensive and defensive game strategies for students. Demonstrate game techniques and recommend player position assignments. Cooperate in the pre and post workouts. Assist in the designation and recruitment of scholarship athletes. Plan and schedule coaching sessions according to established standards. Understand each player’s strengths and weakness and accordingly train players individually or in groups. Maintain skill development programs for designated players such as offenses, defenses, receivers, linebackers and quarterbacks. Fundraise for purchase of equipment, uniforms, and supplies based on assigned budget. Coordinate with UYWEFA Office in recruiting and team traveling activities. Coordinate maintenance and repair works for athletic equipment. Promote athletic programs through community events, fundraising, public speaking and marketing. Supervise academic progress of each player and implement necessary action plans.

Teaching Physical Education

As a volunteer teaching physical education in schools, you will teach a variety of sports to children aged 8 to 16 in kazo community. The sports that are normally taught at schools in Ugandan  are aerobics, track & field, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Each class has  one  PE lessons per week, so your day will be spent teaching a variety of age groups.

When you arrive at your placement, you will be assigned to an experienced supervisor who will be on hand to offer you support and guidance. You will start out by shadowing and assisting local staff, but depending on your ability and confidence, you can also lead your own lessons. Depending on the school’s requests, you may be asked to coach a team from the school and prepare them for inter-school competitions.

By teaching Physical Education in Uganda, you will watch each child’s confidence grow. As you work with them to develop their talents, you will witness how their increased self-esteem impacts on their personal relationships.

Community Centre Volunteer

Internship Information

This opportunity would suit someone who has experience of administration or teaching young children who is looking to help develop a project from the grass roots. The ability to work with the community to develop the project is essential. Candidates will need adaptability, enthusiasm and patience.

All volunteers will be given the opportunity to continually develop through formal training sessions, observing professional practice and regular forums to discuss best teaching practice. Teaching staff will meet twice prior to opening the schools to coordinate their term plans. They will then meet with the community to discuss learning needs for the children and discuss the proposed curriculum.

 

Responsibilities

  • Teaching at UYWEFA International Education Centre (English, Physical Education, Math or Science)
  • Assisting with various youth programs (dance, drama, photography and sexual health sensitization / awareness).
  • Assisting with community workshops (financial management skills etc).

 

Qualities

  • Bring self-motivation, patience, open minded attitude and respect for local culture, traditions and dress code
  • Teaching experience is not required

More information

Start date is flexible, however, volunteers will be asked to commit to three months. Language and cultural lessons will be provided. A home stay will be organized by UYWEFA for a small monthly fee. Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate on many other projects that UYWEFA is currently implementing.
